good baby food: garbanzos and wild rice puree

It's happening. Baby S is breastfeeding less, and eating more. It's a gradual change- she's eating more breakfast, more dinner. She's obsessed with drinking water from her sippy cup (or my cup, or daddy's cup, or that stranger's cup). Resulting in less hunger for breastfeeding.

Sigh. She's growing up.

It was easy to give her good nutrition when she was breastfeeding- no preparation involved for a highly nutritious meal whenever she needed it! And yes, she is still getting a lot of what she needs from my breast milk. But as she begins to have less breast milk and more food, I need to make sure that she isn't replacing the milk with empty calories.

That's why I'm loving this recipe for garbanzo and wild rice puree. Not only is it excellent for her, it is also one of the first meals that she has really enjoyed! Extra bonus- the partner and I ate this (not pureed) for dinner as well, and loved it.

Garbanzo and Wild Rice Puree
9 months and up

Ingredients
1 can garbanzos*, rinsed and drained
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 medium onion, chopped
1 large tomato, chopped
Pinch cumin, oregano**
Pinch chili flakes (optional)
1 cup chicken or veggie broth***
1 cup wild rice, cooked

1. Saute garlic and onion in a little olive oil over low heat until onions begin to look a little translucent. Add tomato and saute for about another 3-4 minutes, until tomato starts to break down. Add spices and stir.

2. Add garbanzos and broth. Bring to a boil and then cover and simmer for about half an hour.

3. When done, combine a little of the garbanzos and wild rice in a food processor for baby. Add some water if you need more liquid. Process to the consistency that your baby likes.

4. Parents can enjoy the garbanzos over the wild rice with salt and cracked pepper to taste. Delicious!

Enjoy!

*Try to find a BPA-free can. Eden Organics is the only one that I know of at this time.
**Don't skip on the cumin and oregano! They neutralize the gas causing properties of beans- important for baby and you!
***If using chicken broth, try for an organic option- it will taste better and be better for you! I like the Pacific brand. Another option is making your own veggie or chicken broth- very easy to do and freeze in ice cube trays.
